Awesome tool
I'm a handyman and this is the first Leatherman I've owned. I now feel naked without it. I use it every day. I recomend it to anyone who needs to be able to grab the most common tools without carrying a tool box around. Often I can walk into a situation, pull out my Leatherman and fix things on the spot. Most commonly used items: screwdrivers, pliers, knife and saw blades.
Another excellent Leatherman product
The Leatherman itself is, as ever with Leatherman products, absolutely excellent. Well made, versatile, tough... all as expected.

HOWEVER, this product does NOT come with a 6-Bit Set. You will be paying an extra $18 or so for nothing. i.e. do NOT buy this product and instead buy the standard Leatherman unit on its own. If you want the extra bits then buy the 48-Bit Set that they produce...
Great Tool
Bought this tool and I am very pleased with it. I use it while fishing, hunting and everyday use. What impressed me the mose was when I used it to cut thru a 1/8 inch screw. Knife blade sharpens up easy, though the tip seemed a little weak when it first arrived. The sheath is good enough, not excellent but good. The bits work well. All in all I see myself using this tool for a long, long time.

It's unique, it's useful, and it's unbad.
When I found out Leatherman makes a tool with locking pliers, I had to have one. So I bought one. Impressions follow:

1. Usually things are larger than I expect, but this one was smaller than I expected. Maybe it's just the fact that I've used big, bulky Vise-Grips all my life, but I really expected this tool to be hefty. It's not bad that it's small, and the plier jaws open nice and wide despite their small size, but I'm nonetheless surprised that it's no bigger than my Wave, even when open.

2. It's not as hard to prepare for use as I had expected. Yes, you have to unfold the plier jaws, and yes, you have to clip the handle into place on the jaws; but, considering that with ANY locking plier you will have to stand there and adjust the force screw until the jaws clamp down with just the right amount of force anyway, the extra "assembly" needed to use the pliers isn't significant.

3. The craftsmanship isn't as good as I expected. Everything is plenty strong, but the fit and finish isn't up to par with the newer, "post-Wave" tools. The plier jaws aren't the exact same width, the folding tool lock is hard to push and doesn't give a lot of feedback, the folding tools themselves flop around a bit, the hinge on the jaws is just a little too tight, the folded-sheet-metal handle is just a tiny bit too wide for the stuff it holds and so it got crimped a little when the rivets were driven into place, etc. It's not crappy by any means, but it doesn't have that laser-cut, precision-machined feel that my Wave has.

Three stars for doing what it says it does without having any noticeable weaknesses. If they improved the design spec so everything fits just right, it would get four stars. If it were the tool of my dreams with everything I want and nothing I don't, it would get five.

I've had my Crunch now for several months, and I feel compelled to bump my review up a notch. Why? Well, it isn't because I've come to appreciate the not-quite-perfect fit and finish of the tool -- that still bugs me a little bit. Rather, it's because over the past few months I've discovered that the Crunch is THE most useful multi-tool ever created.

I took a gamble when I bought my Crunch, because I had serious doubts about how useful a mini-size lockjaw plier could be, even when combined with a token assortment of tools. All I can say is, "boy was I wrong". If anything, the small size of the lockjaws make them even more useful than full-size Vise-Grips, because they can be used in so many more places than Vise-Grips can. Also, given that multi-tools tend to have crappy leverage compared to full-size pliers, the ability to clamp the lockjaws onto something and then focus all your attention on moving the thing instead of keeping the jaws from slipping is unspeakably convenient.

I was initially concerned by the relatively small selection of fold-out tools that the Crunch has, compared to other multi-tools...but to be honest, most other multi-tools just have 50 slightly-different sizes of flathead screwdrivers anyway, when all you'll ever need is one. Well, the Crunch has three, two of which are combined with a can opener and a metal file, which means that there's really only one flathead screwdriver worth mentioning. So there's no unnecessary duplicity there. Meanwhile, the knife and the crosshead screwdriver are predictably indispensable, and the metal file is handy from time to time. So all told, the tools that the Crunch has are more than adequate.

My complaints about the fit-and-finish of the Crunch still stand; Leatherman could do a better job of making everything fit together just right, and I wish they'd put in the time to do so. But that said, the Crunch is definitely THE Leatherman to buy if you're actually going to use it for real work.
If you can only carry one....
If you can only carry one tool with you, the Leatherman Crunch would have to be first choice. Shortly after I received mine for Christmas one year (from my kids), we were traveling across northern Arizona. It was Friday afternoon, we were at least 100 miles from any measureable civilization and one of the front brake calipers came loose. It made a lot of noise as it banged against the front wheel. We pulled over and the Crunch was invaluable to re-attach the caliper as the bolts that attached the caliper were a proprietary bolt with a large Torx type head that was rounded on the outside. No other tool (other that the dedicated GM tool) would have been able to grip the rounded outside of this bolt. Five stars isn't really enough!!!
I like it better than the original PST.
The Crunch is a very rugged quality tool. It lacks an eyeglass screwdriver, but does have three straight blade screwdrivers plus a Phillips driver. I like the locking feature on the screwdrivers and knife blade, and the plier handles do not cut into your fingers like the open handle PST does. A bit more time is required to open the Crunch and get it ready to use as a plier than is the case with the PST. The angle of the one handle on the pliers is awkward to grasp comfortably. I like having a socket for hex bits, but am concerned it would be easy to lose the adjusting screw when removing it to access the socket. I did not think I would like the serrated knife blade, but find it ideal for stripping small wires. (One reviewer said it is difficult to sharpen. The trick to sharpening serrated blades is to hone the flat side of the blade lightly at a very shallow angle.) Because I sometimes want a needle nose plier, I will carry my PST, too. The Leatherman cases are dry and hard. I always apply a leather treatment oil repeatedly until they are softer. I did not need a Crunch, but have always been enamored by them. A gift certificate from my brother allowed me to do something frivolous that I do not regret and that is becoming very practical.

Best I ever had.
This tool is the best multi-tool I've ever owned! It came early, too! It's stiff to open so it won't come open in your pocket when you don't want it to, and all the tools and blades lock in place when you open them. The knives are extra sharp to the point to where I am really surprised. The saw blade has staggered teeth, and the wood/metal files look great.
One of the best out there.
This is one of the best tools I own. I bought this one for my dad because I felt that he was missing out for not having one. I've had mine for a year and it is an absolute wonder tool. The knife on it is very sharp. In fact I haven't had to sharpen mine since I got it one year ago. I use it a lot on investigations and just about anywhere else. The Philips head on it is made very solid and actually works like a screwdriver. The outside of the tool had rulers on both sides (Standard & Metric). With 19 tools on it, there's nothing else you need. I can't comment on the flashlight because I've never used it (since it was a gift). However, if you want a top of the line tactical flashlight for a reasonable price then you have to consider the Fenix LD20. Check out my other review to read about it.
Strong and tough but poor design?
The Leatherman Core is built to satisfy the heavy duty demands for any job. Its very heavy for a multitool and it features thick stainless steel tools to prevent breakage. This model is similar to the vintage Leatherman Super Tool series.

Pros:
1. Stainless. (It does rust however)
2. Strong pliers.
3. Thick steel tools.
4. Knife is very sharp. *ouch!*
5. Great metal file.
6. Handles have a smooth edge.

Cons:
1. Plastic bushings in hinges. This is a BIG NO, NO! I'm still wondering why did Leatherman went this.
2. Tool locking buttons are (in my opinion) fragile and weak. Compared to the Wave's locking design, the Wave is 10x better and brings confidence.
3. Nylon sheath is poor quality and could result in loosing your multitool.
4. Not American made.

It fails to my standards. I would rather purchase Victorinox's Swisstool over the Core.

BTW. The little Leatherman flashlight (Monarch 300) is AWESOME! Must a have.

Nice but the skeletool cx is better
The difference between the Skeletool Cx and the Freestyle Cx
is simple that Freestyle doesn't have the Bit driver and the carabiner bottle opener... and only 0.5 ounces less... I will prefer the Skeletool always.. but the Freestyle is ok...

about the plain blade is just matter or taste i think... I like the serrated blade on the Skeleool cx

Minimalist but Useful
I own a number of Leatherman tools, and the Freestyle is another fine addition to my collection. While the pliers aren't as beefy as the ones on the Wave or similar larger tools, they are perfectly capable of most tasks. The blade is a useful shape and holds an edge nicely. The main advantage to this tool is the small size and light weight. Fit's it's nitch very nicely.
Disappointed.
Was disappointed. Lots of money for a little plier! My husband has another Leatherman that he uses all the time so I thought, after seeing a a review in a magazine, that he would like it. Its small and when you squeeze the handles to cut or squeeze its akward and uncomfotable. It hurts! Returned it for a refund.

Excellent multi-tool
I got this to replace a lost leatherman wave. This one is said to use better steel in the blades, and is a little better designed. The thumb holes for the blades are bigger, making one handed opening easier. All in all an excellent tool, top quality construction and durability. The screwdrivers are also better, using removable/replaceable bits. My one complaint is the included leather holster. It works fine, but this holster has nylon elastic sides instead of leather. I much preferred the ALL leather holster that the Wave came with. I just feel like that elastic nylon will wear out long before the leather will. Still a great tool, and I'd still buy it again over the Wave.
Great tool for just about anything
The charge is great. I was going to get the surge but the charge felt better in my hand. I use mine at work everyday. Sometimes I have to build or breakdown displays for my department. I never need to look for any other tool. It has everything I need. I even purchased the extra bits. They work well together. I think every woman should have one.
Leatherman Charge AL
Excellent product, used it out in the bush in Kenya. A must have for any outdoor activities.

Nice and compact, but not perfect
By it's look and feel, you can't help but like this little baby, but it's not perfect. Firstly, the "bottle/can opener" is really just a bottle opener because the front bit is blunt (I suppose you could have it sharpened if you wanted to). The awl is similarly rather blunt; not as sharp or solid as the ones on Swiss Army Knives. The flat-head screwdrivers have a tendency to nick your thumb if you're not careful when prying them out. The fingernail slot for the wood saw is difficult to reach unless you unfold the scissors first.
Great except for one flaw
I've owned a lot of multitools over the years, have an original Leatherman that's about 20 years old at this point, and have many other Leatherman tools so I know their line fairly well. The Juice is in some ways the best concept of them all, but my tool has one big flaw. The springs in my model are more than a little weak. It wouldn't be so bad if it were for one of the small tools, but unfortunately it's for the larger knife blade and the Wharncliffe style blade. Usually the springs in Leatherman products are quite strong, but not in this case. Perhaps I just got one with a few weak springs. Also, the tools don't lock into place as on many multitool products these days.

Overall, though I like it and it has many pluses. The springs for the screwdriver are strong, though, and it snaps into place with a satisfying click. Tools fold from the inside and outside of the handle, so you get a few more smaller tools such as small screwdrivers. It's more compact than your typical multitool. As someone already mentioned, the knife blades appear to be hollow ground. (I'd actually prefer straight sides for added strength, but many people do like hollow ground blades for ease of sharpening and lightness). And the bright metallic colors are cool, except that this one isn't really Thunder Purple so much as dark passionate pink. Finally, the Juice comes in several different models with a greater or lesser number of tools, depending on your needs.

Except possibly for the Leatherman Wave, I think this is the best tool Leatherman has made yet.
A Great Pocket Knife
Before this series of knives came out you were pretty much limited to those made by Victorinox (Swiss Army). I love my Swiss Champ, and use it quite a bit, but the juice knives are as well built, but more compact than Swiss Army.

The tools are well organized and the quality of the tool is excellent.

One reviewer says that the can/bottle opener is no good for opening cans because it is not sharp. I would doubt that this person has ever opened a can with it. It works fine for cans...as well as opening bottles.

I also own a Juice CS4 and it has fewer tools, but fits in your pocket better.

I needed a multi-tool to replace a general store (made in china) tool for my work as a theater technician. I looked at a few different models, the Core and Wave as my two choices. I was given the set (also a knife collector, appreciated the package deal) as a gift before I could decide on the purchase. I wanted a tool that I could use for a long time to be the "trusty" tool, not a pretty little thing that I would be afraid of damaging. The Core is just that; it is a brick. The tools themselves are good sizes (4 blades are a good 3.75") and are very thick. There are no flimsy little blades in sight. I was concerned about having to unfold the tool to get at the blades (as opposed to the Wave with has the 4 on the outer casing, nice touch), but with a little practice, I can get any one of them out quickly and with little effort. The pliers are a great side and join up perfectly. I have yet to try cutting wire of any sizable gauge, which is one place the generic tool fails miserably. The other tools, very similar in lineup to a Swiss Army (though larger), are easier to get at that I had expected. It is easy to open one tool as opposed to pulling all out on one side to get at the middle screwdriver. The tools sit inside the handle well, so one doesn't have to worry about having cuts after using the pliers. The Core is a bit large and heavy (4.5"x1.5"x.75"), but for the quality of the tools it holds, I find that a necessary sacrifice. In a pouch with a Maglite on the belt, it vanishes until needed. Overall, very pleased with my first Leatherman.

The C33LX knife that comes with the Core was a welcome addition. About the same size and use as one of my Buck knives and a Spyderco product. The blade is made of a very good metal and is sharp out of the box (though the Spyderco is much sharper, but more brittle as well). Lightweight and fits easily in a pocket. In that way, its transportability is great. The Spyderco came with a pocket clip, the Buck with a lanyard hole (silly for a 3" knife). The C33LX has a pocket clip (I dislike these, removed it immediately) and a carabiner clip folds away into the knife blade when unneeded. I love this clip and use it constantly to hang the knife from a belt loop. The handle is very light, but made of some weird material (see the product description above) that is slightly irritating to my hand, sort of a rough plastic coat. A bit more delicate than the Core, but works perfectly as an "always there if you need it" tool. For the price the combo is set at, the Core is worth the full price, the additional knife is a great bonus.

The leatherman Multitool is great for my handy jobs and fit nicely along with my belt. The knife is a nice quality and very sharp to boot as well.
Great Quality
The Core is the end-all be-all of multi-tools that you will need to buy. Leatherman exceeded my expectations; right out of the box you could feel the quality of the craftsmanship. It weighs a lot more than your average multi-tool, but to me, that is a positive aspect that illustrates its quality. The tools lock, which is a plus if you've ever had skinned knuckles or accidental cuts from tools slipping. The tools are razor sharp as well.

Leatherman offers a 25 year warranty, and the product is made in America. What more could you ask for?

Best Leatherman ever
Got this for my husband for Christmas. He has had a Leatherman for the last 25 years, and had had his old one rebuilt twice! It was lost cutting brush last year and he really missed it, so I bought him this one. He LOVES it, says it is the best ever built. Special locking features add safety (and he is a safety nut), and the matte black finish is great. Only drawback, he doesn't like the case much, says it's indestructible but too bulky. Oh well......You will like this thing!

I have used this at least once a day since I got it. The best part is that each of the various functions do not skimp on quality. I would HIGHLY suggest this for anyone that already carries a pocket knife. I do not use the included sheath, but I did buy the optional clip and it works perfectly. The clip locks in place, and will only come off if you want it to. I often use the clip to access the inner tools (my fingernails are awful). I carry this everywhere I go, and though it has some weight to it I don't even realize it's there anymore, just like my wallet and cell phone. And the black color makes it look cool as well.

how do I say this politely? he's very happy.
I got this for my husband. He's had a Leatherman for years, and its never going to wear out, but its so hard to find something for the man who has everything. He uses his Leatherman's about 20 times a day (I am not exaggerating), so I figured, what the heck. Get him the cadillac of Leatherman's. My descriptions may not be too clear, but he's liking it. According to him, the old Leatherman's couldn't be adjusted except at the factory or with extreme difficulty or an extremely expensive tool, but the new one has a different way of adjusting the tension and adding/removing tools so you can do it at home. All those bits! That leather case! Apparently he likes the size and feel also. I think this was a succesful gift.
Premium Quality
This is extremely well-made product from Leatherman Tools. The blade steel holds a beautiful edge and seldom requires sharpening. I would rate this product above any multi-tool on the market.
Can't manage without it
I got this for my nephew who had one exactly like it stolen from his desk. This one he keeps on his belt at all times when awake (and probably sleeps with it under his pillow).

Fantastic little light!!!
Alright, I admit it, I'm a flashlight freak. My wife would tell you that I've spent a small fortune on them....not totally true.
Lately I've been busy switching over to LED flashlights (batteries are getting so expensive using the old school bulbs).
Being an owner of a Leatherman Monarch 500 flashlight, I already knew they were more than capable of producing a top drawer product. After reading the reviews there was no doubt that I just had to fill a "void" in my flashlight collection. Being a flashlight freak demands you have a light in every rig, in the garage, several in the house,in my hiking and hunting supplies and for every occasion. What I didn't have is a small, powerful light that I could comfortably carry in my pants pocket. The included pocket clip is rugged and works great. The end-cap switch is the only way to go in any "serious" flashlight need. The LED Mini Maglite is fine but the twist on/off switch is not nearly as quick and nifty as the end cap switch. The 3 light level positions are easy to master. The lowest level produces more than enough light for a midnight hike and the highest beam throws light nearly as far as my 3D LED Maglite.
My confidence is so high with this little giant that even with a big black bear sighted 2 days ago next to our house I walked a 1/4 mile down the driveway in pitch black to fetch the newspaper this morning.
Mr. Ed's Anywhere Light
I was excited when I first received my light. However, the accompanying booklet was less than helpful in instructing me in how it actually worked. After using it for a day I found that it was really simple but a little serendipity to find that out.

This is the most powerful energy efficient hand light I have ever owned. I don't have light measuring tools but, according to the literature, this light's max output is 100 lumens and my Surefire (with three CR123 batteries) puts out 105 lumens and only lasts 1/3 as long as the Leatherman's one hour does. I am completely satisfied with my Leatherman 3 Watt LED light. Mr Ed

I have bought many streamlight flashlights and this new Leatherman is perfect. Very good light output and durable. Hope Leatherman comes out with a holster for it. Very competitive price to the many small size flashlights out there.

A Very Nice Package!
Ideal combination for everyday use. Has the basic set of tools and bits (hex, flat, phillips and square) in the most common sizes, and every blade locks for use. I've had this for about 4 months now, and I kinda feel naked without it by my side (sucks if you fly a lot). I have not really needed another tool (except a hammer, of course) to do a 'fixit'.
Personally, I like the nylon sheath. It is bulkier than the leather one, but it is more pliable. The bit holder slides in the sheath behind the wave. Careful with the bits though. They are tough and built for use, but standard bits will not work in the holder (the sides have been shaved to make they whole system more compact). Lost bits will cost you a lot of money. You can't buy individual bits, and I don't remember seeing a basic set.
Overall, a very good value for your money.
desert island tool.
Without a doubt, this is the one thing that I own that I use pretty much every day of my life; it rarely leaves my belt. I am a fairly competent handyman, gardener, amateur mechanic, music/audio tech, and all-around tinkerer, and ALL of these tasks are made easier with this tool.
I've had mine for eight or so years (consequently, I can't speak for the bit accessories, updated sheath, or any of the other updates that apply to this one), and it at every turn has exceeded my demands...
On the Wave in particular, the exterior locking blades (straight/serrated knives, saw, and file) are the most welcome feature, and the fact that both knife blades can be both opened and identified with one hand, without looking, has come in handy when working in tight or dark spaces.

On the rare occasion of a failure (an accessory breaking), the folks at Leatherman Tools were more than understanding and quickly got it back to me within a week or so.
I will be a customer for life, no doubt....
I love this thing
I had the old leatherman wave and loved it, this only builds on the success of the older model and adds many new wonderful features. It's great to have the interchangeable bits, they are great.

Great Tool
This Leatherman has not left my belt since I got it. The outside-opening blades are a wonderful change from the traditional inside-opening ones. The blades are sharp, and the tools are strong. I work as an IT admin, and the pliers and screwdrivers are priceless. I have owned a Gerber and a few knock-off brands, and they bent and broke. The Wave holds up. Highly recommended.
excellent tool
Excellent tool, very handy. Does not fair well with sand. The metal "safety clip" preventing the blade from opening in pliers-mode broke after about 3 months. Great for travel or EDC.
Leatherman
This model seems to be very good and sturdy. I only wish it included an awl. I haven't had it for very long but so far nothing has bent or broken and it appears it will not rust when wet.

Very good multi-tool
I got this as a present for Christmas of 2005. This is one of the best multi-tools on the market. Along with knives and plier heads, it also has a saw blade, screwdriver heads, and many other bits.

I am in the U.S. Army. Numerous Soldiers, who need a compact multi-tool, personally buy different varieties of Leathermans .

This is definitely worth getting.
Broke twice under normal use, once new, once fixed under warranty.
The tab which secures and releases the tools snapped twice while I was closing the tool under normal use. It is a bad design. There is just a small hinge nub which broke. The tool is also very stiff to open and close. My previous Leatherman, a Wave several years old, was a dream until I lost it.I couldn't remember the model name and I bought this one instead. Despite others with good experience, mine is totally unsatisfactory.
Excellent high quality product.
This is not my first multi-tool but it is my first Leatherman and I am really impressed. It's just an excellent, high quality, well made tool. Every feature is top notch and I find the lock/blade feature for every tool extremely desirable. I would recommend this tool to anyone.

Great product, but first consider these two things...
A beautifully crafted tool with great functionality and durability. However, there were only two issues I wanted to address for potential buyers:

1. From a functional point of view, the Wave is absolutely comparable (check the Leatherman website where you can do side-by-side comparisons of different tools), and significantly cheaper. You may want to look into this.

2. Although aesthetically pleasing, the black handles actually feel rough, almost giving the sensation of running your fingernails down a chalkboard. I tried it for a week, hoping that I would get used to it - but I didn't, so I returned it and bought the Wave.

Personally, I am more comfortable with the usual smooth, metal finish typical of Leatherman tools. I don't think this affects the functionality of the tool in any way, but I was just not pleased with how it felt in the hand.

Not everyone may feel the same way, so if you are considering this purchase, I would try the aluminum handles yourself in person to see if it is a texture you can tolerate. If not, the Wave may be a better option, especially given the comparable functionality, same exceptional construction expected of a Leatherman tool, and significantly cheaper price.
Charge ALX is the One.
I've heard about Leatherman from a friend some months ago when I was searching for a multitool. Well, this is great! The blades are very sharpen and the mechanism to lock is very good. I like a lot the Wood/metal//Diamond-coated files. They are very good! Also the Leather Sheath is very robust.
This is the multitool you can buy for sure, well designed, fits fine in your hand. I recommend!
Pure Genius
I still have my old 1990's Leatherman that was given to me by my oldest brother the day I graduated from tech school. Now I sacafice the old for the new and got this modern Leatherman which is totally awesome. It's make you think how prices have change. In the 90's, my old leatherman was a very Hot item and very popular back then and cost my brother a pricey 60-65 bucks, I got this modern awesome Leatherman for just 80 bucks with much more features. That's just a 15-20 dollar difference from then and now. Thanks Leatherman and great price with no issues in shipping at all.
P.S. I will keep and cherish my old 1990's Leatherman for many years to come.

Finally a tool that fits comfortably between the Micra and Charge
WHAT THIS TOOL IS NOT
I have seen this tool pitched for hiking/camping. If you are an avid outdoorsman, get the Charge TTi. The Skeletool is lighter but only by 3.2 ounces (5 compared to 8.2). For that minimal weight savings, you sacrifice having a saw, file, backup blades and a can opener. Seems like a really bad trade off in survival situations.

WHAT THIS TOOL IS
The Skeletool is a great pocket knife replacement. It is light enough and compact enough to replace your trusty pocket knife. Without even openning the swing arms, you can access the knife (which is very solid) and bottle openner / carabiner. Openning the swing arms provides access to very solid pliers and screwdriver. The screwdriver gives access to 4 screwdriver heads since the removable bits are reversable and the handle stores an extra bit.

The Skeletool would also make a great multitool for IT support people since it has everything that a tech support person might need in a pinch.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Build quailty is great (as I have come to expect from Leatherman). For the minimal size and weigtht of the tool, it provides good functionality. If you carry a pocket knife and/or just need the few tools that the Skeletool provides, I would definately recommend replacing it with the Skeletool (a real set of pliers can be very handy). If you are looking for a toolbox replacement (or as near as you can get with a multitool) or if you are looking for an outdoor survival tool, get the Charge TTi. You will give up too much for the 3.2 ounces of weight savings.

Personally, I have both. I usually carry the Skeletool, but grab my Charge TTi when I need a fully functional multitool.
Well designed tool for the minimalist.
So, the Skeletool is finally out. It was supposed to have been released November 2007. I've anxiously been awaiting the release (that keeps getting delayed), and finally got it a couple of days ago.

This may not be the most helpful review in the world, but since the tool is pretty minimal there isn't a whole lot to review. It's light (compared to other full-sized tools) but also seems to be very durable and well-made. It also feels comfortable to hold and has an ergonomic design.

The blade on it is quite nice and will replace my Leatherman C301 pocket-knife. It was a tad bit stiff at first, but after a couple of days it opens easily with 1 hand.

I really like the screwdriver bit storage in the handle. The way it works is, you always leave a bit that will be exposed and ready-to-use when the tool is opened (the philips is in when you first get it). The flat-blade bit is stored in the handle. Handy having the screwdriver readily available when you open it.

Overall I would recommend it if you're looking for a quality full-sized Leatherman tool that shaves off a few ounces over some of the heavier alternatives like the Wave. Very nice product!
A little disappointed
I purchased the Skeletool as a replacement for a Leatherman Kick I gave to my stepson, thinking it would be an improvement; however when I received it from Amazon, it was not exactly as I imagined. First, it is a little smaller than I thought it would be, about 4/5ths the size of the Kick, with proportionately smaller pliers and knife blade. It is a little lighter, but not much, and with all the nooks and crannies I kept looking for more tools. One feature I miss from the Kick is the ability to use the screwdriver with the handles closed. In the Skeletool one must extend the handle with the carabiner end out to use the bits. And speaking of those bits, they are rectangular in cross section. This is fine for the flat bits, but the Phillips bits don't look like they would work as well as a regular hexagonal bit. It is the first Leatherman tool I've had that I thought was more about form than function. It certainly looks cool, but just doesn't seem to have the substance to back it up.

After using the tool a couple of times, I remain disappointed. the black coating on the screwdriver bits comes off during the first use, the handles have a lot of sharp edges, (I pinched the web of my hand while using the pliers). I have always liked leatherman products, but this one does not impress me.

Built Like a Tank
I own quite a few of these (see my other reviews) and besides the Swiss Army multitool this Leatherman is pretty good also. I bought it for approximately $43.00 at a local Target and it is a great deal due to its quality and value. This tool feels like it can endure a lot of wear/tear and it does. I've used it to disassemble devices and torque screws very tightly. That kind of work usually leaves the poorer quality multitools in disrepair, but this one endured very well. You won't find the $43.00 deal on Target.com. It seems to be only available at the store itself. I am very happy with it and highly recommend it.
leatherman core
i have been using leatherman tools since the early 90's, and by far my favorites have been the supertools(supertool, supertool 200). the core is the latest in this tool line's evolution. when the supertool 200 came out, i thought, "wow!, they fixed all that was wrong(not much) with the supertool." the same can be said about the core. it is one more step in the constant evolution towards excellence. the core, as with all supertools, is the strongest in leathermna's tool lines, the wave line(wave, new wave, surge)being the most versitile. for me strength is were it's at. that being said, alot of versitility can coaxed from the core's tools. for instance, i routinely use the smallest flat head screw driver as an improvised drill bit on various wood working projects. improved and longer tools,and better lock system enhance performance on the core. i especially like the longer saw blade, as it makes it easier to cut larger diameter wood, a definite plus when in the woods and you need to cut tree branches, etc. other improvements include more comfortable grip, and when you pull open a tool(i.e. a screwdriver) you don't pull the rest of the tools with it. all in all this is an excellent tool, but check it out for your self. leatherman has such a good selection of tools, that if this one doesn't suit you, you are bound to find one that will.
Cleverly designed, the best just got better!
This tool is an evolution of the already excellent Super Tool 200. I own both and getting to love the Core by the day. No-nonsense, very practical and useful; if you want a strong and versatile can-do-all tool without having to pay the earth, then this is the tool for you. This is the best value for money. Difference Between Stainless and CX Version
I think there is a lot of confusion about what advantages the CX has over the cheaper (-$20) stainless version. I hope this review will clear some of that up. Some reviewers are advising you buy the stainless version because the only difference is a slither of carbon fiber. That is simply not true. The CX has a lot more going on for it than that!

1) The metal used to make the blade in each model is different. The stainless version uses 420HC steel, which is a decent metal with good hardness and good edge retention. The CX version uses 154CM steel, which is considered by many as a "super steel" because of its good corrosion resistance and excellent toughness and edge retention. Imho, this is worth the $20 price difference alone.

2) The blade styles are different. The stainless version has a plain edge whereas the CX has a partially serrated blade. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The plain blade is much easier to sharpen because you dont have to deal with maintaining any serrations (if you dont know what you are doing, serrations tend to get ground away when you do any sharpening). The partially serrated blade, however, is much more versatile in terms of cutting. In a pinch, you can used the serrated part of the knife as a saw or just for more cutting power. Additionally, if you learn the proper technique, sharpening a serrated blade is not that much more difficult, albeit a bit more time consuming. Personally, I like the partially serrated blade.

3) The tungsten coating isnt just for looks. True, it makes this tool even sexier than it would otherwise be, but it also adds a layer of corrosion/oxidation protection. This is a big deal to those of us who intend to use the tool in humid or moist conditions. Natural oxidation isnt always that noticeable and protects the layer of aluminum underneath it. However, it is porous and is not as durable as a coating.

4) Some reviewers have stated that the carbon fiber portion of the scales adds cushioning to the handle, making it more comfortable to hold. I dont know if that is true or not because I have only held the CX. Still, it might be something worth considering.
Skeletool CX
Finally received my CX. Removing it from the package I was very pleased with the overall feel of the tool, the fit and finishes are excellent and there are no immediately noticeable sharp edges. It was slightly heavier than I thought it would be, a little heavier than my usual EDC pocket knife, but not bad. Like other reviewers before me I noticed that the carbon fiber may reduce the weight very slightly, however I think it mostly serves to make the tool more aesthetically pleasing. I don't have the problems with the bits that another review had, the bit in the bit holder is held in by a catch that has to be depressed to remove the bit, The other bit is very secure in the handle, although it may get loose once there is some wear on the bit. The bottle opener works and now I'll carry it around for a while and see how it feels in the pocket. All in all I'm very happy with the tool, it has most of the tools I use the most, lacking only the scissors, in a smaller lighter package.

Update - carried it around all day in business casual dress, the position of the pocket clip and the slim profile allow it to ride unobtrusively and comfortably in my pocket.
It's what Batman would carry
A previous reviewer mentioned there being no real difference between the Stainless Steel Skeletool and the CX...Except for the little Carbon-Fiber strip...That is NOT correct!

- The Stainless Steel model has a "Plain Edge" 420HC Steel Blade.
- The CX model has a "Combination Edge" (partly plain, partly serrated) 154CM Steel Blade.

If you search the net, you'll see that between the 2 types; 420HC is noted as not being good for holding its' edge, while the 154CM will hold its' edge very well (but is hard to sharpen).

I already have a multi-tool (Swiss Army Champion Plus), it's a great tool to be sure, but for me out of the 30 tools in it I only ever use the small blade and once in a blue moon the scissors. It's a "little of everything" tool but not particularly strong in any one of the particular tools.

The allure of the Skeletool for me was:The simplicity, but being strong in what it gives you:
1. On the CX model, the 154CM combo plain/serrated blade is beefy enough to do a job I'd be afraid of snapping the blade on the Swiss Army on, Batman could certainly cut through some tricky situations with this.
2. Solid pliers. Strong enough to extract Joker's teeth, yet nimble enough to pull out his finger/toe nails.
3. Easy to carry because of the Carabiner. The teeny little keyring on the Swiss Army is a joke and it's too bulky to put on a keychain (and if you did it would be a pain to put-on/take-off) or it's clunkin up one of your pockets. Who's got time to be fumbling around skin-tight rubber leotards for tools while doing an interrogation? Not The Bat! The Carabiner makes it nice and easy to just snap the tool to a Batbelt and be ever ready.
4. 2 Phillips, 2 Flathead Screwdrivers. It's a multi-tool within a multi-tool. Sometimes even Alfred needs a hand with stuff around the house.
5. Last, but certainly NOT least...It's SEXY! Pictures don't do this tool justice, you have to see it in person to really appreciate the "oooo ahhhh" factor. Certainly worthy of being in the Batbelt.

Bottom line; It's a well built, solid, versatile tool that keeps it simple.

In some respects, in a class by itself
I was a big fan of the L-Man Wave and carried one for several years. I loved the convenience of having the blades, saw & file open from the outside. These components also featured high quality cross-locks similar to the ones on a lot of premium pocket knives. These basic design features are maintained in the Charge TTi.

The quality of these particular items - blades, files and saw - seem to me to be the things that set one multi-tool apart from the other. The quality and design of one screwdriver bit or can opener is pretty much the same as that of another. And the good multi-tools all have "decent" pliers. But it is not so with cutting blades, saws and files. Here there can be a big difference.

The L-Man Charge is NOT the largest multi-tool I own but its two cutting blades (my others have just one) saw and file ARE the largest featured on any of them (no longer true, as I now have a Swisstool X). I believe this is possible because of the fact they are accessed from the outside. Their size need not be limited to make room for the pliers to fold into the handles as with tools whose blades are all accessed from inside.

The saw, file and the blades are not only larger but also of very good quality. The saw cuts as effectively as any I have used with very little clogging or sticking. One side of the file is diamond coated, making it more versatile. There is a serrated sheepsfoot blade with an integral cutting hook (very useful) and best of all the main, straight-edged blade is of premium S30V steel. If you know knives you know this is top quality stuff (and not cheap). Most other companies - even the good ones - don't even publish what they are building their tools from. I get the feeling there is a lot of 440a (or lesser steel) out there.

The "inside" tools on the Charge TTi now have a very smooth and solid locking mechanism which was lacking on the original Wave. This is a definite improvement. And compared to the Wave the Charge TTi has a better look and feel to it.

There are extra niceties. At nearly 9 oz, the Charge TTi is (to my tastes) "slightly too big for comfy pocket carry". And using a sheath doesn't work well for me since I wear sweats a lot. The "pocket" clip is therefore a definite bonus, allowing me to tuck the Charge TTi in my waistband where I hardly notice it. The built-in lanyard attachment is nice, too, and an improvement on the Wave's. (I don't like accidentally dropping and losing my expensive tools - so a good lanyard attachment is a must for me.)

In addition to the original L-man Wave tool, I have used a Gerber Compact Sport 400 (smaller, lighter) and an SOG Powerlock S63 EOD (larger, heavier). These are very respectable tools in their own right and the SOG in particular seems a little better than the L-Man Charge TTi in a couple of respects (see the upcoming review). But on balance I feel that the Charge TTi is the best tool I own and the only one I would rate as high as a 5. And if I could only keep one, this would be it.

Leatherman Charge TTi
Good tool, problem Phillips bit, mediocre customer service. I chose to purchase this tool because it fit my needs better than other Leatherman models or the competition. By and large it is a good tool with enough options to keep me from climbing off of a ladder and running to the tool box/pouch so much. The first big problem I noticed with it is the stock combination #1 - #2 Phillips / slotted blade screwdriver tip. The combination Phillips end on mine would not grip a screw head without pushing the tool into the head so hard as to create a risk of slipping. I called Leatherman and told them that the design of the tip was no good and the woman at customer service told me "Well, sir, that's your opinion." Yes, that is my opinion after 36 years of using tools professionally. At any rate, I found out that I could order Phillips bits for the Charge that were dedicated sizes rather than combination so I thought I would give it a try. I ordered the set of replacement bits for $5., and to my surprise there was a redesigned combination bit in it that works just fine! Grrrrrr. I sent an e-mail to Leatherman grousing about this point and still haven't heard back.

While I was ordering replacement bits I also ordered the extension bit that will hold the flat Leatherman bits and standard hex bits. It's a real winner.

They still haven't addressed the "thumb pinch" issue if the pliers slip off of whatever you are gripping and your thumb is close to the pliers joint. Just don't choke up on the handles and you will be OK.

Bottom line: It's worth buying. If yours comes with a combination Phillips bit that has rounded milling on the business end rather than a nice sharp square cut you have a problem bit that they may have corrected by now. (My tool has a Dec. 06 manufacturing date inside of it.)
Unparalleled - as close to perfect as I've found for a multitool.
The Leatherman Charge TTi replaced my venerable Leatherman New Wave as my every day carry closing in on two years ago. I've loved everything about this gear since I got it. About the only thing I've found is that the titanium really didn't decrease the weight much. It's a near perfect instrument, and for those of us who like to keep a solid multitool handy at all times, this should be the one. I've been carrying a multitool in a sheath (and sometimes clipped in a pocket) for many years now, and I've made it no secret in my other reviews that I've come to appreciate the Leatherman line. I'm going to break down why you should be buying this tool vs. one of the many others on the market:

Pros:
1. Pound-for-pound, I've found no other gear that packs so many high quality tools in such a clean and comfortable design. Much attention was given to the layout and ease of use. It's solid when doing any task and still feels comfortable and "beefy" in your hands. Its definitely not cheap feeling in any way.
2. The S30V steel blade is one of the highest quality knives out there, and better than most dedicated knives I've used. Many manufacturers skimp on the steel quality when it comes to where it's needed the most: the knife. But this has great shape, steel, and sharpness.
3. The pliers deliver a lot of functionality in one nicely performing package: soft wire cutter, hard wire cutter, standard pliers, crimper, and needle nose pliers. I'm sure anyone could successfully argue that a dedicated tool for each of those jobs would perform better and have more surface area for the job. But, this is a multitool and I've used every one of these and they did the work I needed, and it's all together.
4. All of the tools lock out, and the locks are all solid.
5. The knife, file, serrated knife/gut hook, and saw are all accessible without opening the pliers. This makes the most frequent tools convenient.
6. The grip is nicely knurled, and I've never felt once that I was going to drop the pliers. In fact, I've used it quite often one handed, opening and closing the pliers as well as most of the tools when the job demanded it.
7. The tools themselves are all well designed and deliver on craftsmanship. The steel seems to be of good quality all around.
8. There's a lot of tools here: Crimper, pliers, needle nose, soft/hard wire cutters, wire stripper/bottle & can opener, the Leatherman bit interchangeable screw driver, scissors, mini screw driver (for eye glasses or small electronics), dedicated flat head screw driver, knife, 3-suface (wood, metal, diamond) file, saw (as good as any saw I've used) serrated knife with gut hook, & metric/imperial rulers. They all open fairly easily and have all proven very useful in my time with it. The gut-hook works well to cut cordage. There's also a permanent lanyard ring (though you have to take apart the handles to release it) but the quick-release lanyard ring that comes with it may prove more useful.
9. The nylon sheath has room on the sides for a penlight, pen, or other tube-like item. Over the years, I've carried a Mini-gel pen, arc light (AAA battery), mini sharpie permanent marker, and a tube lighter. There is a slot in the back to put in a set of the Leatherman bits. Two fit, but I find that carrying one pack of carefully selected bits works very well. I've yet to need the other bits, but YMMV.

Cons:
1. Not made in the U.S.A. Although I think they source parts from all over and assemble in various places (including the U.S.), I'd like to see at least their higher end models being manufactured and assembled locally.
2. I think, based on the name, that some of these tools should have been made in titanium. I don't see why a few couldn't have been. And the frame itself should have been all Titanium instead of using steel inserts. The TTi is a bit misleading here as only the exterior of the handles is Titanium as far as I can tell. They could certainly cut off a bit of weight by doing this, but Titanium is expensive, so there would be a tradeoff. Maybe someday they'll have a special edition version.
3. The file could have had a release mechanism so it could be used to sharpen the main knife in a pinch.
4. They used secure torx screws to put it together. And while I have YET to see anything come loose after near-daily use for 2 years, this was probably a mistake. Not that you would need to get into it often (see number 3 in cons and 8 in pros), but not everyone has secure driver bits handy like I do.

I couldn't be happier with my selection. It's an improvement over my LM New Wave in many ways, but most especially the much better knife. I still carry a dedicated knife, but this one is fantastic. The fact that it's part of a multi is significant. Most multis come with cheap steel knives and they aren't exactly bragging about it. If they had made more of it from Titanium, the cost would be more, but it would have shaved off some of the weight.

Without hesitation, I give this a 5. The cons are seriously nitpicking to find flaws. I have yet to need to return a tool to Leatherman, but from most postings I've read on many sites, they are prompt and courteous when it comes to replacing or repairing their hardware. I've even left feedback on design in the past. I understand the need to lower costs to compete, and that's why everything gets outsourced. Perhaps that decision could be rethought, at least for a more "professional" tool such as this. Even so, my hat is off to them. I absolutely never leave home without it unless I have to fly. I would recommend this over every multi-tool I've ever used and owned, from Gerber to SOG to Victorinox.

Quality is excellent as usual. Only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is that it seems to pull out of my Wave a little too easily. I'd like to see it modified so that it locks or snaps into place more securely.
Great little device
I work in the electronics department at a major warehouse. I have to put the base on televisions, put T.V. stands, and home theater systems together too. The bit driver extention is very useful. I don't have to look for screwdrivers because I can keep this in the sheath with my leatherman and bits. It allows for excellent torque. Very handy on screws that are set deep. I love it.

Very good multi-tool if this is what you need. Make sure it's what you need though.
I have owned a few Leatherman multi-tools in the past. The last Leatherman I purchased was the New Wave. I am going to compare the Charge TTi with the New Wave.

Unfortunately my New Wave was stolen, but I know that tool very well. I owned the Tactical New Wave, which was oxidized in black. Functionally the Charge TTi and the New Wave are very similar, except for a few subtle differences. Keep in mind I am talking about functionality, not material or aesthetics. Actually as far as the tool is concerned the only real difference functionally is that the Charge TTi has a cutting hook on the serrated knife and the New Wave doesn't. Also the Charge TTi has a crimper. Really that's it as far as the actual multi-tool goes. Most other tools are identical. The Charge TTi does come with 6 additional bits (which means 12 additional tools). Both multi-tools have a large and small bit driver. For about $12.00 you can get 21 double-ended bits that will work for either the Charge or the New Wave. I would list all of the other tools, but Amazon already does that.

One big difference is the material. The reason one might get the Charge TTi is because it's handles are made with titanium and the main blade is made with S30V stainless steal, which is a much higher quality steel then the New Waves 420HC stainless and also better then 154CM stainless on the other versions of the Charge (AL, ALX, Ti). In fact, S30V is some of the best steel you can get on hunting knives and multi-tools today. Also the Charge TTi is supposed to be more durable then Leathermans other multi-tools. Another benefit is that with the Charge TTi you get 6 additional double-ended bits which easily fit inside of the included sheath. Finally the Charge TTi just looks better in my opinion. That's no big deal though because I look for function before I look for aesthetics.

Really it comes down to what you need. If you're just a recreational user then I would recommend the New Wave. It's much cheaper then the Charge TTi and is almost just as functional. You don't get the additional bits or the cutting hook but you're not missing too much. I very rarely need to use any of the additional bits that came with the Charge TTi. Also, even though S30V is far superior then 420HC you probably wont care too much. You can always sharpen the New Wave if you need to. However if you're an industrial user and you rely on your multi-tool heavily on a daily basis then I would recommend the Charge TTi. You will really appreciate the much higher quality S30V and you will probably get more use out of the additional bits. Also the additional strength of the Charge TTi is definitely a plus. This tool gets 5 stars because it's flawless. It does cost a bit more, but what do you expect when you're buying a multi-tool that has titanium handles and a blade with one of the highest grade stainless steels available today? Try pricing other blades that have S30V stainless, they aren't cheap! If I wouldn't have found such a great deal on the Charge TTi then I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another New Wave. This is an amazing tool but make sure it's what you really need.
A beautiful tool in an Industrialist kind of way....
It was a tough choice choosing a multi-tool. If you didn't know already just about everyone makes them these days. The prices of these tools range from $30-$150. I had one of the original styles of Leatherman (The kind that you had to open the pliers to get at any of the tools.) It was durable and I like the idea of supporting a US manufacturing company so I set out to buy another. The two that I was considering was the Skeletool and the Charge TTi. This model looked like it had about everything and it's a good feeling to get the one that has it all. The Skeletool looked very cool but I didn't think I could "live with less" or however their new slogan goes. The TTi was only about 3 more ounces in weight and came with a much better knife and tool set.

Reading the reviews of this tool made me laugh. There was everything from flimsy construction reviews to "The tool was missing the saw." After receiving the tool and using it for a month I can say that everything was included as listed and the tool is truly a marvel of engineering and workmanship (I LOVE the unique feel of the titanium body). These tools have come a long way from the original tools and the way each tool locks into place and how each piece works together is unbelievable.

I think were many people make the mistake with a Leatherman is that they are expecting the refined nature of a Victorinox Swiss Army knife or something similar. With a Leatherman the blades and tools are not polished to a mirror finish. They are punched out of very high-grade steel and run though a rock shaker for a couple of days to knock the unwanted metal hunks off. The Leatherman reminds me of what a soviet Cold-War era knock-off of a Swiss Army knife would look like... not nearly as pretty but probably more functional and sturdy.

My new Charge TTi is beautiful in its own Industrialist way. If you are looking for a museum showpiece of a knife I suggest going another rout. If you are worried about the quality of this tool you can buy with confidence; barring abuse, this thing will likely be around longer than you will! I have already used it may times and while camping it was particularly useful. A multi-tool will never replace even a small toolbox, but when they are the only option, it's a very good item to have.
Pure Awesome
I'll start by noting that the Leatherman Charge is basically just a fancy Leatherman Wave.

With that out of the way, here's what I like about mine compared to the Wave - it's light weight since it's largely titanium and it has an awesome "hook" blade that I use all the time to open plastic clamshells that electronics come in.

Apparently the blade is made of harder steal than the one with the Wave. Can't say I've noticed, Leatherman's always come with amazing blades that never seem to need sharpening.

So all of that is just relative to the Leatherman Wave. On it's own the Charge is just a great tool. Pliers, philips screw driver, mini screwdriver, scissors, an assortment of knives and saws, and a can opener. I use it constantly, for everything.

Only one complaint - the pliers are aluminum, I think. Whatever they're made of, don't use them to cut hard metals. You'll ruin your fancy $160 (MSRP) Leatherman.

An extra that should be more than an extra
I've been carrying the latest Wave for a few months now, and I've never found a tool that fits my lifestyle so perfectly. The only bad thing I had to say about the tool, was the sheath it came with. I usually just use a Nite-Ize multi-holster for all my gadgets so I didn't feel the need to purchase an alternative right away. It's a pocketknife. I have pockets. Took me ten minutes to figure it out, but it was worth the head scratching. Regardless of how much I hated the holster, this clip/larnyard set found its way into my hands on Christmas morning. Just a day before, I had discovered there was already a larnyard ring ON the Wave, but it's hidden better than Jimmy Hoffa, tucked behind one of the brushings. However, as good as the existing ring is, it isn' removable for quick-release use. Within a day, the removable ring in this set proved to be superior. Simply press the lock button that holds the ring in place, and pull, like throwing a grenade. Comes off easy, only when you do it yourself, I've never had it fall off on its own. But the clip is the alternative I find myself using on daily basis. It fits in the same slot the ring does, can't complain about only being able to use one because of the existing ring on the Wave. I've carried my clipped Wave in all manners of pockets, from a dressy buttoned shirt breast pocket to the change pouch in a pair of jeans older than I am, and I'm never carrying a bare Wave again. It's saved me the hassle of digging through my pockets for the tool, without sacrificing any features of qualities of the tool itself. It's also very discreet, the well-known trick is to keep the tool inside the pocket with just the clip and top of the folded tool showing, don't risk clipping it onto the outside and bumping some one in the subway with it. This also, is not a belt clip. It's designed to simply hold the tool in place in a pocket, it will not hold the weight of the tool if you hang it off a belt or a strap on a backpack. That's what holsters are for. The smaller Leathermen can be carried on a belt with a clip, because they are very lightweight. But the Wae, Charge, and deluxe charge are not smaller Leathermans, they are full size tools and should be treated that way. If you don't confused it for something it's not, it fulfills its purpose beautifully.
Also, contrary to the last review, the clip does not cause the knife blades to loosen, that was an effect of the oil the reviewer used on his Leatherman. An incorrectly oiled Leatherman, clip or no clip, may unfold at the worst possible time. No hard feelings for the last reviewer, simply clearing up some confusion.
Nice addition to any Wave.
I'm a bit surprised that the clip and ring aren't included with the Waves, but I guess that's the corporate mentality. These may not be value added for all users and they can turn it into a profit instead of increasing the base price of the multitool.

That said, in response to the other reviews, you don't want to oil the blades so they slip open at the slightest movement. That was the the problem most likely. The other problem is that the clip isn't meant to have the tool on your belt or exposed. It's supposed to go inside your pocket where it has a modicum of protection and the clip only allows it to ride at the top. It's not meant to carry the full weight outside of a pocket or on a belt. The pocket also provides protection of sorts from the blade opening inadvertantly.

I don't use the lanyard ring very often, but when I do, I enjoy the quick release feature. The ring itself is on the sharp and thin side, so over time, it could wear through a lanyard if you don't use a metal connector and just tie it off.

All-in-all, these are a nice compliment to the New Wave, and I recommend them since they aren't that expensive. They do what they are designed to do - if you buy them knowing that, you'll be satisfied.
Keep your leatherman in your pocket.
This clip is perfect if you'd like to keep your leatherman on you, but don't want to have it visible on your belt. The clip's grip is secure. Use it if you want to carry your leatherman with a "lower profile".

I don't use the lanyard ring, so no comment.

What's not to like?
One thing that chaps my hide is a cheap tool. I don't like 'em, I don't buy 'em and I avoid using them if I don't have to. Leatherman is well known for their quality and they don't disappoint here.

Good Points:
This New Wave is extremely well built.
Resists torque/twisting that some other multi-tools don't.
Nice heft, but not too heavy to slip in a pocket.
Smooth and comfortable finish in the hand.
A really nice selection of functional tools.
Great tool locking, easy to release (but only when you want!)

I've used several other multi-tools and beyond the novelty, I never really enjoyed the flip out style (Gerber) because it seemed a bit unstable and difficult to put back. And most of the others cut into the palm. The only detractor is the price, but I don't mind paying for quality and this baby delivers.
Excellent tool, but the case is a joke.
A few days ago, I recieved this item as a gift. I've always been a multi-tool and Swiss-knife nut, so I'm not going to rant about how amazing the tiny scissors are like the first-timers.
Right out of the box, there was none of the usual stiffness Leathermen usually have for the first couple days of use. Usually I have to toy around with all the extras while watching a movie marathon to get these things loose. But the Wave? Nice and loose, took me ten minutes to believe it. I was able to just slip it in a pocket before running off to a job, I'm the building's unnofficial handyman, and this silver darling didn't disappoint.
A few days later, I've managed to use most of the tools enough to get a feel for the quality.
The pliers are very easy to handle compared to my usual set of needles, I'm considering clearing that spot on my belt in favor of the pair on this multi-tool. The screwdrivers, both flatheads in eyeglass size and standard, worked very nicely with the way the folded knife forms a handle to twist. The bit-driver flathead/phillips seems like a nice trick so far, simply for the phillips head. The scissors worked fine cutting this rebellious piece of wire that was too close to a knot to use the built-in wire cutts built into the pliers.
Later on, I tried the wire cutters on some old brass wire and they performed good enough to save me a trip to the toolbox.
I love the knives. Both the straight-edge and serrated can be opened with one hand, pending you're right handed. Simply hold the folded knife in your palm and unfold the knife with the thumb-latch sticking out. It's no switchblade, but it's easier than the Swiss knives when it comes to quick drawing. The wood-file and saw can also be used while the tool is folded, although I wouldn't recommend flipping the saw out one-handed. It's a good tool, but flesh is softer than steel, don't risk it.
And every single featue of this knife, from the tiny screwrdver I used to salvage my sunglasses to the serrated hunting knife, lock in place. And can be unlocked with a thumblatch that's just reachable enough to keep everything one-handed without it slicing closed during use. Truly, these locks should be on even the cheaper knives, rather than as a higher-priced feature.
...and the case that came with it, offered less function and comfort than my girlfriend's three-dollar thong. Which is probably made from the same cheap leather. The first time I remembered it was in the box and put the tool in, it fought back! The leather is so stiff it bends back like cardboard. After a day of spraying it with a water bottle, it softened up slightly and is now slightly usuable, although I still keep this compact tool in my pocket.
And the holster supposedly has three accesory pockets. All I see are two pinkie-finger sized slots on the sides of the cloth covers, and this little flap strapped against the back of the holster interior. Maybe, just maybe, you could fit two drill bits and half a stick of gum in there with your Leatherman. But actual accesories, or something I'd use? No way. They also make a nylon version, for six bucks, which I've never seen up-close and won't make assumptions about, mine just came with the leather.
Overall, this little guy has a new home in the change pocket of my jeans. A real tool, that is worth the price. And it's parody of a holster? Well, maybe I could sell it off as a cell-phone case to this blind guy across the hall.
Best of these kinds of multitools, great gift.

I had a great group of guys in my wedding party and I wanted to get them something they might use every day. Now, some of these guys already own multitools or have their own copies, but nobody owned a top-line model from Leatherman. In fact, I think they all had knockoffs.

The difference between a Leatherman and a cheap imitator is huge. Steel quality is measurably better, and tolerances are smaller, so your pliers really grip and your wire cutters really cut. I liked the screwdriver bit size, really slotted in tight on Phillips and slot screws.

Consider, though, that it's a massive tool, so it's reaches the limit (and good arguments are made for exceeding the limit) of usable size and weight, but if you wanted a tool for the work truck or to hang off your work belt "just in case", this and a flashlight are definitely the best "just in case" tools you can own. It does come with a belt case, and the keyring is large enough to take a decent carabiner for clipping onto a belt or a work area for use.

Worth the cost? I'm not sure it's worth it to many, but if you have to own the best multitool possible, you have to consider this as a strong choice. The premium makes this a tremendous gift because it is a fine quality tool. It's usually not something one buys for one's self ("I can live with a cheaper one")... once you get one, you can't ever go back to the knockoffs... you've been properly spoiled.

Indispensible tool
Leatherman tools have become legendary adjuncts to DIY people and those fond of the outdoors. The Surge model, like the Wave and the Charge, is of top quality steel with an impressive array of tools. There are not many jobs you cannot do with one of these. Many people (sensibly) carry one of them wherever they go, as part of their everyday "dress". I use one for some task virtually everyday. Recently, an aquaintance of mine was trying to land his light aircraft when the undercarriage jammed. Bad situation...He had his Leatherman, however, and a buddy of his riding with him cut a hole through the floor of the aircraft with the tool, put his arm through it and manually released the undercarriage and all ended well. Had he not had this tool, however...

Owners of Leathermans are unlikely to need such a dramtic application of their tool, but for sure they will use it time and time again. There are many imitators, even the Swiss army knife people have copied it, but Leatherman is the original and best tool of this type.
So much better than first generation tools
I've had the original Leatherman tool since 1997and it has not seen a lot of use since real tools work so much better. I picked the Surge up on a clearance deal intending to resell it. I ended up opening it up and have practically fallen in love with this thing. The screwdriver works very well. The one handed knife opening is outstanding. You can carry it flat on your belt, so its excessive size doesn't keep it from being carried comfortably. I use it for tasks I would have otherwise gone and got real tools for because it works quite well.

One of the most functional Surge sheaths/holders/pouches out there!
I have the molle types, the leather sheaths and this is my favorite.

It is easiest to keep sideways and in the front of my belt comparing to other sheaths made for Surge, that I have used. My Leatherman Surge sits secure in this one. I feel it is the less bulky and stays in place the best.

If you use it a lot, the velcro closing will start to wear out eventually, but you can either fix it, put a snap closure on it later if need be, or just buy a couple of these sheaths.

As an added bonus, I found that my Garmin Quest and some cameras fits in snug - read perfect - too. So I got a few extra ones for non-surge usage as well.

Very handy little pouch, very functional, good price even shipping might be a little much for a single item. But again, buy two.

Great Addition to the Leatherman Line
I am a paratrooper in the United States Army and I use a multi-tool every day. I have been issued tools from Leatherman, Gerber and SOG and all have their good points as well as bad.

The SOG rusted quite easily after being exposed to perspiration in Afghanistan. It was also not easy to expose the blades in the handle.

Gerbers worked well, but the screwdrivers were not beveled well. Also the bottle opener was so short that it was difficult to open a cold Sam Adams.

This assortment of bits works extremely well. I have never been a fan of leatherman multi-tools because of some poor design flaws in the early leatherman models. Specifically the original Leatherman tool was pretty hard on your hand when using the pliers. The "blades" were on the outside when the pliers were in the open position. If you ever had one, you know what I mean.

Leatherman corrected that with the Wave series by contouring the handles, but the bevel on the screwdriver (flat head) left much to be desired.

I used several Gerber models and was pretty satisfied with them (except for the LEDEND model.....no can opener) Gerbers also will pinch you if you are not careful when using the pliers.

The Victorinox Swisstool is built well, and with MINIMAL care will never rust. The blades are sharp and their placement is well thought out. It has rounded edges in all the right places and as such is comfortable in your hand. It will never pinch you when using the pliers.

I got a Leatherman XT-i as a gift and found it to be well made and comfortable to use. With the addition of this bit kit it should be even more functional. The bits seem to be well made and durable. I still find myself carrying my swisstool more often than the Leatherman, but that is out of 6 years of habit. I'm not ready to retire the Swisstool, but I will give the leatherman a chance.

I also put the bits I thought I would use the most on one card and carry that in the belt sheath that the XT-i came in. That seems to work well.

Great addition to my Leatherman New Wave - useful and compact.
I'm quite a fan of the modified Leatherman bits. They have come in handy more often than I thought they might. In fact, just the other day I found myself changing a taillight (in the freezing cold) on the truck with these.

The kit isn't cheap, but you are paying for the formfactor and convenience. There is another Wave add-on which allows you to use standard driver bits, but it's quite a bit larger than this system.

To start, they've shaved off about 2/5ths to 1/2 of the thickness of a standard bit. This allows them to configure a driver slot in with other tools without taking up the entire Multitool handle for a screwdriver. This kit comes with a nice nylon sheath, but I've found that to be a little too much for me personally. The configuration contains 2 hard plastic holsters for all of the bits. They even include a spare eyeglass driver.

I've changed up my every day carry to include the most commonly used bits on one of the two plastic "cards". I put this 1 card into the back pocket of my New Wave nylon sheath (I've heard of others doing this on their leather sheath, but I don't think there's enough room, personally.

So I don't really use the included sheath with both toolbit cards in it. I just move them around until I get the desired mix and carry one card with my Wave in one sheath. A very nice way to do it, and Leatherman obviously had this in mind when making the cards.

The only real detractor is that the sheath that comes with these isn't really fitted perfectly, but after some use, it probably would be better. I just didn't give it a chance.

The cost is a little high, but the steel is very high quality and I haven't noticed any stripping or spinning out yet. I wish it was cheaper, but this means I don't have to carry a large and heavy pack of bits and I'm willing to pay for that convenience.
great accessory
The first reviewers complaint is like saying cd's suck because you have a turntable! He can actually get an accessory to attach to his "old" Wave to use these bits.

This kit replaces the screwdriver style bit driver and hex insert set I used to carry in my kit. Knowing I got it all there is great. I only wish they would sell replacements piece by piece in case of loss or damage.

I became a user of Leatherman SURGE just somthing arround 3 weeks. In my search for a good qualty mulitool the competitor for Laetherman was Victorinox multitools. Reviews and quality of the steel used for the this tool pulled my sympathy to a Leatherman. There was a second dilemma what model of the Leatherman should I select. I've red a dozen of reviews and have seen some sales statistics. So I can say that the best sale in Leatherman is LM Wave model, at least in US. However the most complete model is LM Supertool. I was looking for a really multyuse tool, in my case size doesn't metter for me. But I couldn't find any good deals for the Supertool. So comparision started between Wave and Surge. And I selected the last one and don't regret at all. If you ask why? Surge has bigger size and larger range of capabilities. 19 tools inside!!! It rocks! I would like to mark up it's sccissors, they are the biggest and rely comfortable for work. Knife blades has a good shape and length. Thanks to its tags they are easy to strip. Pliers are good, exactly what I expected to see. I have bought additional screw drivers heads kit. So that I can use my tool for almost all hand works. The only thing I want you warn is that in new condition tool is covered by oil, so you better to leve it open for a day or two in order to let the surplus of the oil to dry. Another thing that oxid black model looks cool but black color errases very fast so after couple of uses your tool would look like an old. That's my be the only disadvantage to a silver make. For me it doesn't metter how this tool looks like, cause I bought it for progmatical purposes not for show.

Overall my recomendation, buy it!! It cost it's money! Leatherman rocks, whatever make you'll buy!!!
Excellent Multi-Tool
The Surge has come in handy a lot of times for me. It's nice to have such a convenient tool that can take on so many tasks. The black oxide finish is a very nice feature recently added to the Surge. GREAT TOOL!!!!!

best tool in the box
I'm in the Navy Seabees and when i was deployed to iraq i picked this multitool up. My main job was the maintenence and replacement of a/c's, this tool was the best tool in my box hands down. I'v used every accesory on it from using the leather punch to ream copper tubing to using the blades to cut insulation. I've put this tool to the test everyday for 6 months and not once was i dissapointed. if u take care or this knife it will do more then take care of you.
Good tool
Good tool. Mine arrived very quickly. Only complaint is that the black coating is a bit powdery upon arrival. Upon handling it for the first time or two you will have black powder all over your hands.

Other than that, it is solid. Sharp knives, feels strong in your hand. Good tool.

A real multitool
I have owned a Swiss Army knife for a long time but while it can be very usefull it is not really up to what I would call tool grade. The Leatherman Surge meets that standard as much as nay multitool can. All of the blades and tools lock into place and are solidly made. The blades are incredibly sharp. It may not be as comfortable as standard single purpose tool but it is certainly more versatile thatn a screwdriver of needlenose plier. I particularly like the spring on the scissors. It is much more substantial and cannot slip out of its channel.

I highly recommend the Surge multitool.
Heavy Duty Multi-tool
After having Gerber for many years and having it perform countless of tasks mightily, one thing I desired was a heavier duty feel. The Leatherman Surge fits the bill. I like the wider and longer knife blades (four inches long) and the fact that I can open them one handed without opening the pliers makes it really handy, unlike the Gerber, a two handed operation for most. The screwdriver bits are changeable and can be replaced unlike the Gerber. The smaller "jeweler's" bit for small screws, the more functional bottle opener and the beefier scissors and the interchangeable file/blade system is an improvement to my Gerber. It has become my preferred side tool, taking it on camping trips, vacations and remote maintenance outings like the working on the roof or in the attic. It performed well when putting together my kids' swing set this past summer.

With the heft it is heavier compared to my Gerber. I believe that the handle's edges could be more rounder as opposed to square to make it more comfortable to hold. I think Leatherman should place a "lip" guard on the main blades to prevent slippage of the hand. Without it, you could seriously get cut if your hand slips. I also think it could benefit from a pocket clip. (Leatherman does sell this but I haven't gotten around to purchasing the item).

The heavy duty feel gives me a feeling of confidence that my Gerber lacked. Don't get me wrong, the Gerber has not been retired. It remains in my toolbox in the garage and is still used but in a second fiddle role. If I've got to tear into something, the Surge is what I pick up.
I like this multi-tool, however it could be better:
I just got my Leatherman Surge yesterday. I like the fact that it is heavy duty; the downside is it does weigh a bit more than some of the other multi-tools. It's also well made but a little more expensive than other multi-tool I have owned. All that aside, my only complaint is that with the Surge Leatherman has developed a great blade removal and replacement system, but they don't have replacement blades for sale! Also they could add a long thin punch, a gut hook and filet blade to the set of interchangeable blades (I think they would sell well and be darn handy). Given all that I'm still very happy with my purchase.

Heavy Duty (Did I mention heavy?)
I bought one from one of Amazon's partners and the tool arrived in it's sealed clamshell package in used condition. The tool was scratched, dirty and the scissors were loose as well as the knife looked used. I returned it to the company I bought it from and they sent me a refund. I sent an email to Leatherman about my experience and they sent a reply stating that this was a unique experience and that they would check with their quality control dept to see if there is a problem.

I purchased another Surge from Amazon directly and the tool arrived in the clamshell sealed in its packaging. I opened it up to find that the tool was in acceptable condition except for the fingerprints and what looked like cleaning compound still on the blades and handles (just like the one I bought and returned earlier). The scissors were a bit loose also, but not as much as the first (Sounds like Leatherman has some quality issues).

I have had the tool for about a month and I have no other real issues to talk about, it performs well and handles most jobs it was designed for. The tool is solid, well engineered and dependable. The tool feels great in the hand and is easy to open with one hand if needed. The tool is big and on the heavy side (If you are going to wear this tool on your belt, you will always know it's there). A little quirk in the tool is a rattle when it is closed, this does not happen every time it's in the closed position, just sometimes.

Except for the cosmetic issues I mentioned earlier, this is a good product. I plan to keep this with me for quite a while and I do not doubt that it will perform as it should without fail. I keep it with me in the shop, studio, backyard, garage, and when hiking. Great tool, did I mention it was heavy?
Right tool for the job
I'm a rancher. I carry a multitool every waking hour. I've exercised the warranty on a Wave three times in three years. I've broken the detente that prevents the knife blades from bending beyond straight. I've broken the tips of the pliers pulling cotter pins, and I've chewed up the hard wire cutter. The Surge seems to do all these things and more with greater ease than the Wave, and it seems to be taking the day-to-day punishment. If not the fourth Wave is waiting as a backup.

As for the size aspect: I wear gloves in large size. The Surge is not too big for my hands and I can't imagine it'd be too big for medium size hands. IMO, frequent and continued use of the pliers with small hands could be tiring.

I depend on these things everyday. A Leatherman has never let me down even when they've broken. If you use one this much then I'd highly recommend the nylon sheath. The leather case and snap are not as convenient.

BTW, it may not be the perfect tool for the job, but when its the one that 's handy it gets the job done.

I've had the Surge for 6 months now. For whatever reason I took the Wave the other day. Its too small! I won't go back to the Wave. The Surge is the right size. For what I do, the Surge the best tool out there.
Perfect multi-tool!
I dont know whats the problem with the size of the surge...seeing the reviews on here I thought that when I saw this thing I would have said "omG ITS HUGE!!" ...but...uhmm...its the size a STRONG, STURDY and DEPENDABLE multi tool should be! I hate small multi tools because I dont want to feel as if Im going to break the thing while im using it (tighten some screws, etc) or when im using the saw or something. The design is great and personally I can say that the SURGE is the best multi tool out there!
